What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose Veins are visibly enlarged veins that are often bluish in color and may appear twisted. They are caused by the pooling of blood in a damaged vein and can sometimes be painful.

Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly. Varicose Veins have one-way valves that prevent blood from flowing backwards. When these valves fail, blood begins to collect in the vein rather than continuing toward your heart.

Varicose veins often affect the legs, since they are the farthest from the heart and gravity makes it harder for the blood to flow upward.

Varicose Veins Symptoms
The primary symptom of varicose veins is the appearance of highly visible, misshapen veins, usually on the legs. In the early stages of varicose veins, the legs may feel tired, heavy, achy or tense.

Varicose Veins Diagnosis
To diagnose varicose veins, your doctor will typically examine your legs and visible veins while you are sitting or standing. He or she may ask you about any pain or symptoms you are experiencing. Your doctor may also want to do an ultrasound to check your blood flow or less commonly, an angiogram may be ordered to further assess your veins.

Varicose Veins Treatment
Pacific Cardiovascular & Vein Institute’s unique vascular center provides patients with an experience that emphasizes patient comfort and personalized treatment. Our physicians, specially trained nurses and assistants monitor our patient’s progress and provide quality care throughout their treatment. At PCVI, we tailor the appropriate management of venous disease to each individual patient so that the best possible outcome is achieved.

Varicose Vein Treatment Options
Our radiofrequency catheter or laser treatment consists of a thin laser fiber being inserted into the damaged vein, heating the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Once it’s sealed, healthy veins take over and redirect blood flow back toward the heart. Sclerotherapy treats medium and large spider veins on the surface of the legs, feet, arms or hands. Sclerotherapy involves the direct injection of a sclerosing agent into the spider vein using a very fine needle, causing the vein to contract and collapse.
